8 Chic Storage Tips From an Architect's Home

Architect Barbara Chambers' California home is a masterclass in airy minimalism, which she achieves by sticking to the idea that a space should be simple, straightforward, and no frills. Read on for her tips on creating an elegantly ordered space.

1. Tuck the utilities out of the way

A well-organized mudroom can help to filter out the immediate clutter that sweeps in through the front door.

2. Make the daily-use stations beautiful.

Keeping oft-used areas clean and tidy encourages both ease of use and joy.

3. Embrace a minimalist kitchen.

A simple black binder clip holds a patchwork quilt in place on the sofa.

4. Storage doesn't have to look like storage.

Consider adding cabinets in unexpected places, which can increase storage without creating a bulky feel.

Something to consider during a remodel: there is actually room behind walls for shelves, hooks, ironing boards, and more.

5. Psst: There's space behind the walls.

Often, the solution to not having enough storage is simple, but (sometimes) unwelcome: instead of adding more space, cut out unnecessary items.

6. Pare down (to the extreme)

Books can add beauty and information to a space--microwaves and T.V. consoles, not so much. Consider adding storage to hide away any unappealing electronics.

7. Some objects should be hidden.

Don't let changing needs force a move--try, to the best of your ability, to plan ahead for things like decreased mobility with age.

8. Plan for flexibility over time.
