Object of Desire: An Award-Winning Trash Can from Japan

Designed in 1960, the enameled steel Bunbuko Waste Basket received Japan’s Good Design Long Life Award in the household goods and daily necessities category in 2015; we’ve been spotting (and admiring) it at retailers such as Tortoise General Store in Los Angeles, Placewares, and Emmo Home.

According to Tortoise, “Bunbuku was founded by Shiro Takeuchi in 1918 as a zinc ironware manufacturer, which started out making water ladles and buckets. With the incorporation of machinery and the improvement in product research and development, new products like coal buckets and watering cans were added to the lineup. These simple but durable trash cans and storage containers manufactured now are still made using the same processes.”
