Steal This Look: An Uncommonly Organized Hostel Kitchen in Barcelona, Ikea Included

Kitchen at Jam Hostel in Barcelona

Spotted recently on Pinterest: an uncommonly good-looking hostel kitchen at Jam Hostel in Barcelona. My favorite thing about it: the simple, wall-mounted rails above the counter that serve as endlessly versatile storage and keep everything, from utensils to dish-drying racks, well within reach for hungry guests. Fortunately some Googling tells me that most of the elements are easily sourceable from Ikea and elsewhere (that ingenious dish rack included). Here’s how to get the look at home.

The Essentials

Ikea Fintorp Rail
Above: The main element for the Jam Hostel’s endlessly versatile kitchen storage: a wall-mounted rail. Theirs appears to be Ikea’s versatile Fintorp Rail, $8.99 for a 22.5-inch length or $9.99 for a 31-inch length.
Ikea Fintorp Hooks
Above: Once you have the rail in place, simply adding hooks makes for endless storage opportunities. These are the Fintorp Hooks ($2.99 for a set of five), but any simple S hooks will do; when hung on the rail, they can hold buckets, shelves, hanging utensils, or brushes.

The Accessories

Ikea Grundtal Dish Rack
Above: The most ingenious part of the setup, we think: Dish-drying racks that hang from the rails, allowing the counters to stay clear. Ikea’s Grundtal Dish Rack is available on Amazon for $33.99 (and is available via Prime). (For more space-saving dish rack options, see 10 Easy Pieces: Space-Saving Dish Racks for Small Kitchens and 10 Easy Pieces: Countertop Dish Drainers.)
White Wire Basket with Wood Handles from The Container Store
Above: In the hostel kitchen, wire baskets hang from hooks and hold spices. This White Wire Basket with Wooden Handles is $19.99 from the Container Store.
Small Two-Quart Beige Pail from Bucket Outlet
Above: Simple enamel pails, such as the ones used to corral flatware at the Jam Hostel, are available from a wide range of retailers. But we particularly like the simplicity, colors, and price of the offerings from an online outfit called Bucket Outlet. This Decorative Pail (shown in Beige) is $3.89 for the two-quart size.

Stainless Steel Cooking Utensils from Crate & Barrel
Above: Cooking utensils with holes in the handles can be hung from hooks (and easily accessed when needed). These stainless-steel essentials are $12.95 each from Crate & Barrel.

Under-Counter, Space-Saving Goods

Above: Simple white bins lined up beneath the counter streamline a hostel’s worth of waste, recycling, and compost. Consider the efficient, commercial-style Rubbermaid Commercial Defenders Front Step-On Trash Can, available for $139.79 from Amazon (and read more about it in Design Sleuth: Stylish Trash Bins from an Unlikely Source, over on Remodelista).
Toyo Sasaki Drinking Glasses
Above: And, we’re longtime fans of stacking glasses, as seen in the lower right side of the under-counter shelf. They save shelf and cabinet space by leveraging vertical, not horizontal, space—particularly useful if you have a lot of glassware to store. We have many favorites (see 10 Easy Pieces: Space-Saving Stackable Drinking Glasses on Remodelista); shown are the Toyo-Sasaki Stackable Glass Tumblers; £5 via Trouva.
