If you have an interest in fashion, or work in publishing, or have ever read Sassy or Lucky magazines (R.I.P.), or visit the addictive blog I Want to Be Her!, you may already know who Andrea Linett is. For the rest of you, here’s a summary of her various achievements: She was once the beauty and fashion editor at Sassy (where she essentially discovered Chloe Sevigny) before becoming the founding creative director of Lucky. She wrote several fashion advice books (including The Cool Factor and I Want to Be Her!) and was formerly the creative director of eBay Fashion and, more recently, the VP global creative director at Michael Kors.
Andrea has worn many hats, but what she’s never been is a minimalist—particularly in the clothing department. “I have always loved the idea of the capsule wardrobe— there’s something so appealing about minimalism. But it’s just not me,” she says. “In fact, when I worked for Michael Kors, he looked at my tangle of necklaces and actually asked, ‘Have you ever been a minimalist?’ The answer was an emphatic no.”
“My closet is basically a mini movie wardrobe closet. I have every piece for every mood, and I like it that way. Biker jacket? Check! Classic camel coat? Check!” she continues. So why would a site devoted to organization and simplicity ask an avowed clothes-hoarding fashionista for advice? Because while she may have an outfit for literally every occasion, she understands that it’s the basics that are the workhorses. Here, Andrea shares her 10 must-have wardrobe picks:
1. White Button-Down
2. Black Dress
3. Black Trousers
4. White Tee
5. Cashmere Sweater
6. Blue Jeans
7. Blazer
8. Motorcycle Jacket
9. Wool Overcoat
10. Black Boots
