Remodelista recently paid a visit to the studio of Iris Hantwerk, an old Swedish company that makes beautifully handmade domestic brushes. There was much to admire about the artful storage tactics on display in the light-filled workshop, from the collection of brushes hanging simply from nails on the wall to the single row of cubbies mounted above each desktop. But what we took special note of was its smart use of a wall-mounted shelf as a window ledge for storage. Not all windows have sills that jut out; if you have a window that’s flush against the wall, consider installing a single shelf, supported by brackets, just under it. Use the ledge to hold potted plants, some books, or favorite possessions that you’d like to have in open view.
We like the idea of using a white shelf and brackets (if the windows and walls are white) for a seamless look, but a light wood plank would look nice too.
