The 2018 Ikea catalog landed in our mailboxes not long ago, and after a committed thumb-through, this is what caught our eyes.
N.B. Stay tuned for a feature on Ypperlig, Ikea’s collaboration with Danish design firm Hay to be released later this fall.
Above: Svalnäs is Ikea’s new modular wall-mounted storage system along the lines of Danish designer Poul Cadovius’s Royal Shelving System released in 1948. (See our High/Low comparison.) Ikea’s is made of bamboo and fiberboard and combinations range in price from $26 (for two Wall Uprights and the smallest Shelf) to $570 for a whole-wall configuration. The Svalnäs combination shown here is $105. Above: Östernäs leather drawer pulls are made of stainless steel and grain-dyed leather; $9.99 for a set of two. They also come in Handles ($12.99 for a pair). (We’ll add them to our roundup, 10 Easy Pieces: Leather Cabinet Hardware.) Above: The Rattan Coffee Table from the Ikea Stockholm 2017 collection has been out since April, but it’s still worth our attention. Made of solid pine wood with an ash veneer and rattan top, it comes in a 39-inch version ($99) and a 63-inch version ($109). Above: Also from Ikea Stockholm 2017: The Ash Veneer Coffee Table has solid, rounded ash wood legs and an ash veneer top with protective lacquer. It’s $69 for the 39-inch table and $89 for the 63-inch version. Above: This Rattan Cabinet is made of solid ash, pine, and rattan with brass exterior hardware, interior shelves, and magnetic-latch doors. Currently sold out nationwide, it’s expected to be back in stock in late October of this year (fingers crossed); $349. Above: We’ll admit it: When we shop at Ikea, we keep our eyes peeled for things that look more expensive than they are. The Walnut Veneer Tray ($19.99) and Ash Veneer Tray ($34.99), both part of the Ikea Stockholm collection, fit the bill. Above: The Tertial task lamp isn’t technically new—it was part of Ikea’s 1998 collection—but the powder-coated steel lamp is in re-release; $9.99. Above: New Odger chairs are easy to assemble and designed to be indestructible, especially suited for families: Made of a mix of wood and recycled plastic, Odger comes in two pieces and clicks together for assembly. Shown here in dark blue and also available in beige and brown, the chairs are $75 each. Above: Kallana 10-ounce glasses are made of green tempered glass, so they’re resistant to heat shock and impact; $6.99 for a set of six. Above: Another winner in Ikea’s lineup of affordable throws (we miss the now-retired Backvial): The Tuvalie 100 percent cotton throw is available in dark gray or red stripe; $12.99.
