It’s German Design week over at Remodelista, so here at The Organized Home, we thought we’d share some of our favorite storage and organization products from the Deutschland. A few are classics; others are relatively new entries in the design world—all pass our test for quality materials and timeless and smart design.
For the Entryway
Above: Given that Germany is the leading exporter of felt wool, our roundup wouldn’t feel complete without a felt basket. This one, the Kaminholzkorb (or Firewood Basket), from Hey Sign, a German design company that specializes in felt designs, is roomy and sturdy; $200 at Connox in a range of colors (shown is Anthracite). Above: The Gaston Shoe Rack by German-based Side by Side leans against the wall. Made of untreated ash wood, the rack comes with a hanging metal shoehorn; £170 at TwentyTwentyOne. See 10 Favorites: Shoe Storage Solutions for the Entryway for more shoe racks. Above: One of our go-to Web stores for durable and attractive household goods is Manufactum, based in Waltrop, Germany. Their minimalist Desktop Bookcase Made of Sheet Steel, which comes in black and white, is perfect for storing some reference books on a desk or displaying treasured classics on a console table; €41.
For the Kitchen
Above: Erpa, based in northwestern Germany, has been making its iconic trash bins since 1928. The products feature powder-coated enamel exteriors and high-gloss stainless steel lids. From left: The 20-Liter Metal Pedal Bin is €194; the 15-Liter Metal Pedal Bin is €164; and the 5-Liter Metal Bathroom Waste Bin is €85 at Manufactum. MoMA Design Store also sells the tall version in ivory and navy for $250. Above: Manufactum’s Beechwood Fruit Rack is both practical (two side holes for easy toting) and good-looking (simple, streamlined design). Put it on your counter to store apples. Or stack 10 together and place on the floor to hold all your fruits and root vegetables; €44 each. Above: We singled out Weck Storage Jars from Germany in the Remodelista: A Manual for the Considered Home as one of our everyday favorites. They come in a variety of sizes. Sarah swears by her Weck collection for containing everything from last night’s pasta to soup to dried beans; $3 to $16 at Schoolhouse Electric.
For the Laundry Room
Above: Optional labeling—LAUNDRY, 90 GRAD, 60 GRAD, or 30 GRAD (Grad is German for “degrees”)—can be added to any of Hey Sign’s Felt Clothes Baskets; $220.15 at Einrichten Design. Above: Made in northwestern Germany, Manufactum’s Double Washing Bag features cotton laundry bags that hang from a larch wood crisscross frame; €97. There are single- and triple-bag versions as well.
For the Bath
Above: The Faschina Toiletry Bag from German leather goods company Sonnenleder comes in natural (shown), mocha brown, and black; $62.50 at Fendrihan. Above: Side by Side’s You Need Me Handle can be used for hanging a roll of paper towels, a hand towel, dog leashes, and more; $47.88 at Einrichten Design. Need more shoppable ideas? You got it!
