Though we love home goods here at The Organized Home, all of us are slow, careful shoppers—we take our time and think carefully before making a purchase. The next time you’re in need of a storage basket—who isn’t, at some point?—consider supporting small-batch producers and/or importers of ethically made goods the world over. Here are 10 baskets (and brands) we like.
Above: These Iringa Solid Baskets are made of milulu reeds, woven by a women’s artisan group in Tanzania. They’re available in five sizes, starting at $38 for the smallest size. Shown in black, the baskets are also available in natural and rust. Above: These Woven Vessels are handmade by textile designer Kathleen Heafey’s Woven Grey studio in Oakland, California, of 100 percent cotton cord with color-blocked stitching. The baskets are available in two sizes, starting at $64 for the small. Above: This Ultra Tall Vessel is handmade of 100 percent cotton rope by textile artist Lindsey Zinno in her Cincinnati studio, called the Northern Market. It’s 16 inches tall and 10 inches wide; $197. Above: We’re so fond of these Oaxacan Palm Baskets With Straps that we wrote a whole feature about them (see Multipurpose Baskets from Mexico, via a Portland, OR, Shop). The design is native to the Zapotec people of Oaxaca—the strap is traditionally placed around the head—and these particular baskets are made by a multigenerational family business for Non-Perishable Goods in Portland, Oregon; $62 for the medium basket. Above: Made by a fair-trade cooperative in Guerrero, Mexico, these Mercado Storage Baskets are tightly woven of un-dyed palm leaves and finished with leather handles. They’re available in two sizes, starting at $95 for the smaller size from The Citizenry. (The store also stocks an ethically made Ugandan basket; see African Fair Trade Favorites, via The Citizenry on Remodelista.) Above: The Xinh Basket from Xinh & Co. is made of naturally dyed seagrass, woven by hand in a small village in Southern Vietnam (where Xinh & Co. founder Trang Dorris is from). They’re available in five sizes, starting at $21 for the smallest size. Above: This irregular Grass Basket with handles is handwoven by a small women’s cooperative in Tunisia. It’s about 15 inches tall and 15 inches around; $133 at Toast in the UK. Above: This Oaxacan Palm Basket is handmade in Mexico of palm fronds with a removable wool tassel. It’s available in two sizes, starting at $38 for the small basket (about 12 inches tall) from Loom + Kiln. Above: The Halfa Box is made of natural fibers—mainly Tunisian halfa grass—by a group of women artisans in the Kasserine region of Tunisia along the Algerian border. It’s 15 inches across and four inches tall; $48 at Soukra. (For more handmade favorites, see Shopper’s Diary: Soukra Tunisian Goods on Remodelista.) Above: Alexis Mosij—owner of Avenue Boutique, a brick-and-mortar and online shop based in Tucson, Arizona—brought these Oaxacan Handwoven Palm Baskets back from a recent trip to Mexico. They’re available in three sizes, starting at $35 for small. For more sources for storage and organization solutions, try:
