Danish furniture designers have a longstanding love affair with wooden stools. Here’s our roundup of iconic and (future iconic) examples.
Above: Danish design company Hay originally asked design brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec to design the Copenhague Bar Stool for the University of Copenhagen. The stool is available in matte lacquer oak (shown), lacquer oak, blue, gray, and green; $282 at Amara.
Above: Made in Denmark, the Nerd Bar Stool by Muuto has a curved oak back, slotted through the seat before being attached to solid wood legs. The stool is available in oak (shown) and in a black or green stain; currently on sale for $424.15 (down from $499) at Lumens.
Above: The Draft Stool designed by Danish Norm Architects for &Tradition comes in oak or black-stained oak and is available in two sizes (seen here in bar height). The stool is currently on sale for $561 (down from $660) at the Danish Design Store.
Above: Designed by Simon Legald for Normann Copenhagen, the Form Stool (offered in both counter and bar height) is made from a low-backed polypropylene shell seat (that comes in six colors) and oak or walnut legs; $300 at the LA-based A+R Store. The legs of the chair can be completely disassembled, making the stool easy to store and transport.
Above: The About a Stool AAS32 from Danish design company Hay has beech legs veneered in soap-treated oak or black-stained ash and a polypropylene shell seat that comes in five colors. The stool is available in both counter and bar height and costs $360 at LA-based A+R Store.
Above: The Adam Stool designed by Toke Lauridsen for Danish design firm Frama comes in three heights, features a seat made from leather or oak, and is supported by a steel frame. The stool can be easily grabbed (and moved around) due to the hole in the seat. The medium-size stool (65 centimeters tall) featuring an oak seat costs $278 at the Finnish Design Shop.

Above: Made in Denmark, the Gubi 3FA Stool (an extension of the Gubi Chair) was the first furniture design to be based on the innovative technique of moulding three-dimensional veneer. The low-backed seat is made of American walnut (shown), oak, or black painted beech, with a base of black-painted steel; currently on sale for $764.15 (down from $899) at Danish Design Store.
Above: The Series 7 Barstool designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen is made in Denmark from a pressure-molded veneer shell with a tubular steel frame. The natural wood veneer (shown here in maple) comes in nine different woods. The stool is currently on sale for $806.65 at DWR.
